Introduction to Radio Control (R/C) Models

Building and running Radio Controlled (R/C) vehicles is a fantastic Hobby, but with most hobbies to get the most out of it you need to know the basics. This part of the site will hopefully provide you with some of the answers to the most frequently asked questions. If you would like more information, please contact us.

Anything that moves and can be controlled by a radio transmitter can be classed as an RC model. The most popular types are cars, trucks, tanks, planes, helicopters and boats.

R/C Cars:
Cars can be split into two categories, on-road and off-road. On-road cars are normally scale models of actual full size cars for example touring cars, rally cars, Formula 1 cars and saloon cars. Off-road cars are buggies that are either 2 or 4 wheel drive (WD). Cars are available in many different scales from micro measuring just 65mm long up to large scale cars that measure 900mm long.

R/C Trucks:
Trucks play a large part in RC today and are available in electric and Nitro powered versions. There are a variety of off road trucks to choose from including stadium trucks, and monster trucks. The Tamiya TNX is a good example of one of the Nitro Trucks, this comes as a ready to run package and is ideal for those who do not have the time to build kits.

If you are after a more realistic model truck then the Tamiya range of on road trucks would be worth looking at. There are several to choose from with many accessories available from both Tamiya and GPM. For the on road trucks, you can also buy a great range of trailers (please click on “on road trucks” button for more details).

R/C Tanks:
Tamiya produce a wide range of static and radio control tanks. By adding the optional battle system you can even recreate your own battles. Some of them come with realistic sounds and a fully functioning gun turret. They range in scale from 1/35 to 1/8.
